What is Rectal Prolapse?
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the rectum protrudes outside the anus, occurring when the rectal muscles weaken and the rectal tissue stretches and protrudes.
It can be classified into three types — Partial prolapse: only the lining of the rectum protrudes; Complete prolapse: the entire rectum protrudes; Internal prolapse: the rectum is not visible outside but has prolapsed internally.

Symptoms to watch for

Treatment at DLPC
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may be treated with stool softeners and lifestyle changes.
For severe cases, diagnostic investigations such as MRI defecography are advised; if required, we recommend Stapled Trans-Anal Rectal Resection (STARR).
Repair can be done trans-abdominally (opening the abdomen) or by the trans-anal route depending on the length of the prolapse. Partial prolapse can be treated with stapler surgery. We prefer to treat even complete prolapse by the trans-anal route (Trans-anal sacrosuture rectopexy), which avoids the morbidity of opening the abdomen.
Why treat early — Implications
- Incontinence or leakage of stool or mucus.
- Recurrent rectal prolapse.
- Ulceration or bleeding of rectal tissue.
- Infections or irritation of rectal tissue.
- Sexual dysfunction or discomfort during intercourse.
- Impairment of daily activities and quality of life.
- If untreated, the prolapse increases in length and may become impossible to reinsert — obstructing blood supply and causing gangrene of the rectum, needing emergency surgery.
